Beyond the Facade: 'How Does Technology Frame the World Around Us?'
Podcast description:
Technology is everywhere—but are we framing it, or is it framing us? A group of tired architecture students talk about how digital tools shape how we see and design.
We're not just talking influence: we mean literally framing reality. From camera lenses and phone screens to Revit renderings and news headlines, technology sets the boundaries of what we notice, what we ignore, and what stories get told.
In this episode, we explore the concept of the ‘frame’ not just as a visual boundary, but a narrative device. We look at how architecture, media, animation, and journalism all use frames to direct attention and shape meaning. Why does a TikTok feel different from a film? What stories get built into a render or an elevation? How do windows, diagrams, and even news articles act as curated viewpoints?
We bring in examples from Wes Anderson to Parasite, from Casa Malaparte to Google Earth, from entomophagy in Kenyan media to how office design excludes neurodivergent folks. Along the way, we ask some big questions: What gets cut out of the frame? Who decides what gets shown? And how do our design choices reinforce or challenge the stories people experience every day?
Because at the end of the day, every tool, from your sketchbook to your phone, is framing something. And once you start to see that, you’ll realize: technology doesn’t just reflect the world. It remakes it. One frame at a time.
Ariya, you and your groups podcast was such a unique take on this project. It involved a topic I hadn't ever really considered. I love your incorporation of architecture in your project as it relates to the personal experiences you are all involved in. The hook of the podcast was what intrigued me the most, "Technology is everywhere—but are we framing it, or is it framing us?" I think it is so important to utilize gripping statements such as this to, in seconds, present your idea to your audience. The concept of a frame as more than a visual boundary was genius, as it highlights how technology shapes not just our physical environments but also our thoughts, behaviors, and interactions. By connecting architecture with the influence of technology, you effectively showed how these structures, both built and digital, can subtly define and limit our experiences. I also appreciated the personal reflections your group shared as it made the topic feel relatable. In particular, when you discussed how the design of physical spaces can affect one's emotional state or productivity, it made me think more critically about the hidden impacts of the environments I move through daily. The balance you struck between the concept and your own personal narrative made your podcast uniquely thought-provoking. It’s clear that you all put a lot of effort into creating this project. Great work! - Kayla Hennessey
ReplyDeleteI thought this project was so well done. My group thought about doing a podcast for ours but we weren't sure on how to execute it, and I think that you all nailed it! The things that you were talking about, I found super interesting. I can't say I have ever had a conversation with an architecture major, and now I feel like I have. The ways that you use technology into architecture is super important. One of the things that was said that stood out to me was one of the professors turning your model around to see every angle, and I think that technology can be very useful for this to be able to see things that maybe the human eye wouldn't see. Everyone in your group talked really clearly and explained themselves really well, and I think the entire podcast was put together fantastically. - Leah Futey
ReplyDeleteI think that creating a podcast was very creative and unique, and your group did an amazing job! I think it was very cool that you tied being architecture students into your topic. It provided a lot of additional insight that you might not have been able to find through research, but rather through personal experiences. The title that your group chose for your podcast is also very intriguing. At first I thought that the conversation would be more about the different influences that technology has on the world, so I was surprised when architecture was tied in, but I loved it nonetheless! I also loved that you spoke about Wes Anderson because I have always found it very interesting how he "frames" his movies, but I've never quite understood it, but your project made it make more sense to me. Overall, your project was executed incredibly and it is clear that you all put a lot of effort into this! - Emma Tyler
ReplyDeleteI think making your Unit 3 project a podcast was a really cool idea! I feel as if not that many people have done this! Also you and your group's subject is super unique and I love how you connected it to your major and you all spoke what ideas you had that connected to that- it was super creative! I also think bringing examples from so many different people and points of views really took this to a whole other level with ensuring that all parts of the topic are covered. Great job!! -catalina pravda
ReplyDeleteI looove how you guys choose to do a podcast. I thought it was super fun and different from everyone else's projects. I also really loved your podcast description. I thought it was funny and I would have never known you all were architecture students. I wonder if you guys threw in someone from a different field, if they would have different reactions than you guys did just because they are studying something else. All these topics are super interesting and so important and really make you think about the path our world is taking. - Heidi
ReplyDeleteYou guys did a great job with your Unit three project. Picking a podcast as your medium made it very easy to listen and digest what you guys had to say in an easy manner. I really enjoyed listening through your thought process and discussion as a group and the podcast was very engaging and exciting throughout. Reading the short few paragraphs before listening to the podcast its self was great. The short writing did a great job at both making the podcast sound enticing and also giving a brief overview of what would be discussed throughout the podcast episode. Overall you guys did a great job and it was very enjoyable to follow along with what you had to say
